How to use the split bill calculator
Sharing costs is easier when everyone can see the same numbers. This free online bill splitter keeps track of expenses, each person’s share, and the money already paid. Use it for one outing or several purchases, then follow the payment plan to settle your group.
- 1. Add your people. Give the group a name and add everyone involved. Use distinct names so payments are easy to identify. You can include different people in each expense; joining the group does not mean sharing every purchase.
- 2. Record what was spent. Add a description, amount, currency, and who paid. If several people contributed, choose multiple payers and enter their amounts. Select the people sharing the expense, then choose equal shares, weights, or exact amounts.
- 3. Review and settle. The “Who owes whom?” panel combines the expenses into a payment plan. Open the breakdown to compare what each person paid with their share. Copy the summary to discuss it with friends before making payments outside the site.
A fair bill split starts with your agreement
Example: who owes whom after a shared dinner?
Alex, Sam, and Jordan share dinner costing USD 120, paid by Alex. Later, Sam pays USD 30 for coffee and pastries for all three. Their combined spending is USD 150. Because both expenses are shared equally, each person’s share is USD 50.
Alex paid USD 70 more than their share. Sam paid USD 20 less, and Jordan has not paid anything yet. The settlement is therefore Sam paying Alex USD 20 and Jordan paying Alex USD 50. Nobody needs to repay each purchase separately. Choose “Try an example” above to explore these numbers, and open the breakdown to check them.
Equal, unequal, and weighted shares
An equal bill split works when everyone agrees to the same share. An unequal bill split calculator is useful when that agreement differs: one person ordered more, a couple shares a room, or only some friends joined an activity. Deselect anyone who did not share that expense.
Choose weights for proportions. For example, dividing USD 90 using weights of 2 and 1 gives shares of USD 60 and USD 30. Choose exact amounts when everyone has already agreed on a specific figure. Live totals show what remains to allocate, and the calculator checks that the shares and payments each match the expense. Fairness comes from the arrangement your group chooses; the tool handles the arithmetic.
Split group expenses with friends and roommates
For a trip, record accommodation, groceries, transport, and activities as separate expenses. Include only the travelers involved in each purchase. Someone who skips an activity can stay in the group without paying for it, while a person who covered several purchases can see their combined reimbursement.
As a roommate bill splitter, the tool can track shared utilities, household supplies, and rent contributions using your agreed shares. For dinner, record the final bill and any separate purchases. If you simply need an instant bill splitter for one total, the bill split calculator with tip is the shorter route: no names, just an amount and a headcount.
Exact rounding, separate currencies, and saving
Bill split calculations use the currency’s smallest unit so the allocated amounts match the total. USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, INR, and Indonesian rupiah (IDR) use two decimal places; JPY uses none and KWD uses three. Different currencies have separate balances and settlement plans. There is no exchange-rate conversion or combined total across currencies.
Added group entries stay in a temporary draft in this tab when you switch calculators or reload. Unfinished forms are excluded. For a lasting copy, enable “Save on this device” or export a backup. Browser session restore may retain tab drafts; “Start a new group” clears the current group. Data does not sync between devices. Read the privacy explanation for storage details, and keep exported backups private.

Agree on a method everyone finds fair. Split equally when costs are similar, pay for individual purchases when they differ, or use agreed proportions for shared expenses.
Can I split a bill?

how to split a restaurant bill
Use Quick Split to divide the restaurant bill equally and add an optional tip. For unequal shares, calculate each person’s food, tax, and tip, then enter those amounts in the group calculator.
can you split a hotel bill
Yes. Split hotel costs equally, by nights stayed, or by agreed amounts. Use the group expense splitter to calculate each share, and ask the hotel whether it accepts separate payments.
who pays who how much?
Enter the expenses, who paid, and everyone’s shares. The “Who owes whom?” section gives you a payment plan showing each payer, recipient, and exact amount.
who owes who?
Anyone who paid less than their share owes money to someone who paid more. The calculator combines shared expenses and recorded repayments to show the remaining balances.
How to figure out how much someone owes?
Subtract what they already paid from their share. If their share is USD 50 and they paid USD 20, they owe USD 30. Recorded repayments also adjust the balance.
How are leftover cents divided?
When a bill cannot divide evenly, some people pay one cent more so the shares match the total. Quick Split shows exactly how many people pay each amount.
Can I split bills by weight or percentage?
Yes. For a 60/40 split, use weights of 3 and 2, or enter the exact amounts. The calculator supports whole-number weights rather than direct percentage entry.
Can I add a refund?
Yes. Enter the refund as a negative expense, with negative payment amounts for those who received it. If you use custom shares, make those negative too.
What happens after I mark a payment as paid?
The recorded payment updates the remaining balances and appears in payment history, where you can undo it. Only mark payments after money has actually changed hands.
